Do song birds sing more cheerfullly - with greater exhuberance, just after a rainstrom and the sunrise?

Dear NorskOrnitologisk Forening,
Nice to make your acquaintance. I am studying evolution and the song of the bottlenosed dolphins and so have much interest in the ecology and behaviours of birds, because so much is known about them. Though I am an American citizen, I prefer to seek help from Norwegian, Chinese and Britishscientists, if possible, for personal and pragmatic reasons. I would like to know if there is anything in the literature that song birds sing more cheerfully - with greater exuberance, in early morning and just after a rainstorm.

Greetings from Nicholovich (Nicholas) Knarr (my registered name) Rose

Svar:

I dont think birds sing more cheerfully, but they do sing more intensely, after rain, before sunrise and after sunset. They do so, because the air has even temperature and no turbulence at these times, and the sound waves thus travel longer distances. Since singing is broadcasting messages, birds sing more intensely when their Messages carry the longest distances. It is a simple cost-benefit Equation. Singing is costly, both concerning energy and risk of predation.
